Geek Talk: Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate

I took the plunge and installed Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate 1 tonight.  Actually beta 4 was the only one available for download (here) but after installing I went to Help | Check for updates, and it downloaded/installed the RC.

This is the version info it’s reporting:  Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090615 Firefox/3.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

And here are the release notes.

Before installing I did some research to see which extensions (addons) would be compatible after upgrading.  Many of them supposedly supported the latest versions of Firefox, but in reality some did not.  I thought I’d share my findings in case it might help somebody else…  so here’s a list of the extensions I have installed on my PC, version info, and 3.5 compatibility:

Extension

Version

3.5?

Adblock Plus 1.0.2 yes
Better Gmail 2 0.8.1 no
Better Greader 0.6.1 no
Customize Google 0.76 no
Fasterfox Lite 3.1.1 yes
Firebug 1.4.0b2 yes
Forecastbar Enhanced 0.9.6 yes
Google Gears 0.5.21.0 no
Googlebar Lite 4.6.9 yes
Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 no
Paste and Go 3 1.0.2 yes
PDF Download 2.2.0.2 yes
Tab Mix Plus 0.3.7.4pre.090516 yes

I’ve only had it installed long enough to discover these incompatibilities…  I’m sure I’ll be able to find some dev versions of the extensions, like the one for TMP.

The final version should be released sometime this month.

UPDATE:  I’ve found compatible versions of Paste and Go (v3 instead of the previously listed v2) and Fasterfox Lite, and have updated the table above accordingly.

The compatibility often has very little to do with actual compatibility.

I usually just unpack the .xpi, change the max version number in install.rdf, copy it back into the .xpi, and go on my merry way.
  • True, but without knowing the inner workings of the code behind the plugin, you never know if there's something else that's missing, not working, etc. so I only do that as a last resort.

Thanks for the report. TMP is a must have and I will now take the 3.5 plunge too :-).
