Windows XP Service Pack 3 on HP AMD PC’s
I learned the hard way tonight that there is a problem with installing Windows XP SP3 on AMD-based HP computers. That’s what Keith has. I updated his Firefox to version 3 (the best version of Firefox to date – try it out!) and then went to Windows Update to make sure he’s got all the latest patches. His PC is set to automatically install updates, but it’s still good (most of the time, though apparently not in this case) to manually check from time to time.
Turns out to be a known issue; HP released service bulletin about the problem with a workaround that got him up and running again. (I hadn’t heard of any issues related to the service pack — and I work with this kind of stuff every day!)
