Cloverfield
Last night we treated ourselves to a small escape from reality… Things get to be overwhelming at times (as I’m sure everybody knows), and since we still have no decent TV, and I haven’t been able to get into the book I’m obligated to be reading now (one of my specialists loaned it to me with high praise so I feel like I have to give it a shot; it’s not a bad book, just different from what I’ve been reading), that leaves the movies. Tuesdays are 50 cent night at the dollar theater – so off we went!
I mentioned (wow, back in July ’07!) wanting to see Cloverfield before… I actually paid top dollar a few weeks back to see it at the regular theater, but Keith hadn’t seen it yet – and nothing else we wanted to see was showing again ’till nearly 10pm. I ain’t as young as I used to be and can’t do a 10:00 movie on a school night, so off to Cloverfield we went.
It’s a pretty good movie, once you get used to the shaky camera. The whole thing is presented from the perspective of a handheld camera one of the main characters is carrying. Once you get used to it, it’s pretty cool – it makes you feel like you’re part of the action, not just observing it from afar.
You definitely get what you pay for at the dollar theater though. The sound system SUCKED, and the picture seemed dim to me, compared to the full price theater I saw it at previously. Even having seen it before I missed a lot of the dialog, and had some difficulty explaining plot holes to Keith.
But it was FIFTY CENTS! ;-)
I also saw I Am Legend there a week or two back. That was a good movie too – based VERY LOOSLY on the book. I mean the fact that he holes up in his house and has to get back home before nightfall every day is about the only similarity with the book…
I wanted to see Kite Runner there too (I LOVED that book!) but am afraid I’ve already missed it. I was waiting for Keith to read the book (he finally started it last week, at least) before seeing the film. Oh well, it’s on his Netflix list, so I’ll see it eventually…
