A Couple Recent Projects

Just a quick post about a couple recent projects I completed last weekend…

Off the sunroom/back porch we had an ugly, outdated light. Every time we let the dogs out we had to turn it on (switch in the kitchen), then remember to turn it back off when we came back in. I know, I know – simple, right? But it was still a PITA.

So I picked up a photo-cell motion activated light at Costco for $20 and installed it in all of 20 minutes. The hardest part was just holding the dang thing up there while I wired it by myself (Keith was working that day).

I didn’t take a picture before — but here’s the same light in the back yard. (this one is another story all together, I’ll save for another time)

And here’s the after. Just don’t look too closely at the caulk job. ;-)

Now it automagically comes on really dim at dusk, comes on full strength when it detects motion (even our little Yorkie), and goes off when the sun comes up. :) Don’t ya just love modern conveniences?

Another thing that had been bugging me was in the garage… The previous owners had spray-painted the windows on the garage door, I’m assuming so people couldn’t see in. It worked – light still got in but nobody could see inside — but looked like crap.

I tried scraping it off with a razor blade – that would have taken a month of scraping. I then tried fingernail polish remover – it worked, but gave me a headache and made me sick to my stomach, and took forever.

I ended up finding some spray-paint graffiti remover at Home Depot that worked beautifully.

So the white trash spray paint was gone, but then I had the original problem the previous owners had tried to solve with spray paint – when working in the garage at night it was like being on a stage… SO I bought some window film that makes the windows look frosted. It’s not perfect — but it’s better than it looked before, so I’m happy.

Here are some pics of that project:

It’s kind of hard to see much in that last picture – but that’s the point… We get the light AND privacy. :)

We’ve got another project in progress this weekend that I’m trying to take pictures of as we progress… I’ll post again soon!
