AT&T U-verse

Well here it is, finally – the post I meant to do last Friday when I discovered my blog was locked! lol I’m really on top of things, as usual… ;-)
As most people that know me understand, I always need to have something to look forward to, or else I get really down in the dumps and am just not very pleasant to be around. Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix (the movie, for non-Potterheads) was one of those things, as was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (final book of the series).
So what’s next, what’s keeping me going through this insanely mundane life of mine at the moment? Well there’s the trip to Tennessee in August – my mom and I will be meeting at my sister’s house to visit Jodie, Kirk & Nanette. :) But that’s in August.
No, before that I’ve got something I’m totally geeked about… Next Tuesday, July 31, we will have the AT&T U-verse service installed at our apartment. Our DSL has seemed to crawl lately, and Keith and I both have been craving faster internet. Unfortunately FIOS is not available where we live, and we had tried Time Warner cable internet briefly months ago and decided we loved the faster speed–when it was working. It was just completely unreliable and support was horrible.
One day after work we had a knock on our door, and it was a couple of AT&T reps letting us know that AT&T’s new U-verse service is now available here, and they were signing people up. I really just wanted a flyer with all the details so I could look into it, talk it over with Keith, etc., but the guy talked me into signing up, assuring me if I changed my mind I could cancel the install no questions asked.
Well I’ve looked into it, and I’m totally jazzed! What is it, you may be asking? Well it’s two main things right now: much faster internet service, and tv service. Currently we have DirecTV satellite; we absolutely LOVE our DirecTV with Tivo DVR, but DirecTV’s offerings are limited (basically two options, plus all the different combinations of premium channels), and of course the fact that any time the wind blows or a cloud thinks about coming our way we lose signal.
Well it turns out that U-verse is going to cost us a little bit LESS than we’re currently paying for DirecTV and AT&T Yahoo! DSL. And–better yet–that includes the fact that we’re DOUBLING our internet speed! Right now with the “Pro” DSL package we get advertised speeds of 1.5-3Mbps download (tests show we’re getting about 2), and 384-512Kbps upload (tests show around 418Kbps). With the new service, we’ll get “up to” 6Mbps download & 1Mbps upload! That’s twice the best we could be getting now!!!!! (yeah I guess you have to be a geek to appreciate the numbers….)
It’s not FIOS service by any stretch of the imagination (Verizon’s much faster internet & tv), but it’s the best available to us now, so I can’t wait to try it out. It is still a new service, and there are positives and negatives… I’ve been participating in a forum at Uverseusers.com to learn as much as I can before we get going, and to help set my expectations so they aren’t too high. ;-) I won’t be canceling our current services for a few weeks until we’re sure we like everything… We’re both very leery of giving up our Tivo for a lesser DVR, but we’ll just see how we like it–there’s no contract, so we can just cancel the TV part and keep DirecTV, worst case scenario. I’ll keep ya posted!
One thing that kind of freaks me out is that they’ve said the installation could take 5-8 hours. Yikes! So I’ve taken half a day off work. DARN. ;-)
