NY Pics: United Nations
Another really cool thing we got to do in New York was tour the United Nations Headquarters (Wikipedia). We got to see the Security Council Chamber, Economic and Social Council Chamber, General Assembly Chamber, and various exhibits throughout the building on topics such as peacekeeping operations, decolonization and disarmament.

Each of the 192 member states has their
flag flying in front of the UN headquarters

Globe sculpture in front of the UN building. I haven’t been able to find any more details about it…

We thought we’d be artsy and take a picture of our reflection in the globe. (I’m in a striped shirt, Tressa has a pinkish shirt on, and Keith is in blue)
The next 4 images are from the doors going into the UN Headquarters.

Brotherhood

Mural by Jose Vela-Zanetti. It is a mural depicting the human “struggle for lasting peace” and it tells the story of a family of nations riven asunder. But it also shows members of that same family, building the United Nations in the hope that it would restore peace, and then defend it for all people, for all time.

Security Council painting
by Per Krogh. It depicts a phoenix rising out of the ashes, representing the rebuilding after WWII.

Part of the disarmament exhibit, this statue of St. Agnes had been standing before a Catholic church in Nagasaki. While the church was completely destroyed in the explosion, the statue, weighing 1.5 tons, suffered only the loss of its right arm and burns over the back.

I haven’t been able to find anything about this sculpture…

“
Good Defeats Evil“: donated by the Soviet Union in 1990; fashioned a contemporary St. George slaying a dragon from parts of a Russian ballistic missile and an American Pershing missile.

“
Non-Violence“: This sculpture was a gift from the Government of Luxembourg presented to the United Nations in 1988. It consists of a large replica in bronze of a 45-calibre revolver, the barrel of which is tied into a knot. It was created in 1980 as a peace symbol by artist Karl Fredrik Reutersward, and is located in the Visitor’s Plaza, facing First Avenue at 45th Street.
