NY Pics: Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

We had to see the Statue of Liberty, of course! Unfortunately by the time we got our tickets, all the time slots for actually going up in the statue were full. But we still got to go to Liberty Island and walk around, and then Ellis Island.

Interesting story about buying our tickets… The line was about an hour long to actually get on a ferry, so they were actually telling people to split up – one person in line to buy tickets, and the rest in line for the ferry. Tressa and I headed for the ferry line while Keith was waiting to buy tickets, when we ran across this guy in a uniform that claimed to work there and offered to sell us his tickets. I think the uniform said Wackenhut or something weird like that — and we didn’t see any other uniforms like that around us… He said as an employee he got free tickets, and would just say that we were his neighbors or something. He said he’d take us right to the front of the line! The only catch was that it was $10 more than we’d pay if we waited in line — and that he wanted me to meet him in the men’s room to pay him cash. We considered it for a while, but thought he seemed a bit too eager and it all just smelled fishy. So I just told him we didn’t have cash, that we were using a credit card to buy our tickets. Whew, scam avoided, we felt good about ourselves for spotting it and not being duped.

Fast forward, Keith has tickets and we’ve made it through the hour long line and get to security. LO and behold, there’s our guy, a security officer with all the other security guys wearing the same uniform. [apparently Wackenhut is known for security services--obviously not to us though!] We could have gone straight to the front of the line! Oh well. We had fun watching people, listening to music (trumpet player, steel drum player) and talking while we stood in line.

The *only* picture of Keith and I taken on our trip. (we all know how he hates cameras…)

Fair warning if you click on this one – it’s a huge file! Keith used his Photoshop magic to put 3 or 4 pictures together (panoramic, or whatever it’s called – I’m not a graphics person). [looks like blogger resized it b/c it's not that huge after all]

I nearly forgot about this! If you click on this picture and view the full size version, look in the lower left corner and you can see a little bit of the set for Starship Dave, a new movie they’re making with Eddie Murphy. They were going to be filming a few more days on Liberty Island, then moving to Times Square after that. We didn’t get to see Eddie, but there were tons of props and equipment scattered around.

The main building on Ellis Island was restored around 1984; this is part of the building that was not restored.
What a waste, huh?
Exhibit inside the museum. Mom’s got an old trunk like some of these, so I thought she might like this picture.
