Ridiculous Religious Right
From the DefCon blog:
Last month we highlighted the anti-gay website FRC had launched. The site was developed to create controversy around a bill in the House of Representatives which would extend federal hate crime protection to gay and lesbian Americans. Somehow the religious right sees a problem with this, and has used every excuse they can think of to oppose such a logical bill, barring of course the real reason: their unequivocal opposition to homosexuals.
In Yesterday’s Focus on the Family Radio show, James Dobson told listeners:
“There’s a vote coming up on some insidious legislation in the United States Congress that could silence and punish Christians for their moral beliefs. That means that as a Christian – if you read the Bible a certain way with regard to morality – you may be guilty of committing a ‘thought crime.’ ”
Whose reading of the Bible encourages hate crimes? This law isn’t barring Christians from thinking anything, its protecting homosexuals from violent or discriminatory acts.
Chuck Colson goes on to compare this legislation to the “Thought Police” as portrayed in George Orwell’s 1984:
If this dangerous law passes, pastors who preach sermons giving the biblical view of homosexuality could be prosecuted. Christian businessmen who refuse to print pro-gay literature could be prosecuted. Groups like Exodus International, which offer therapy to those with unwanted same-sex attraction, could be shut down.
In classic 1984 fashion, peaceful speech will be redefined as a violent attack worthy of punishment.
HRC has posted a YouTube response to the religious right’s dishonest tactics. Also, check out their site for more information on what this bill would really do.
