Holy Cow!! (French Voter Turnout)

I just started reading this article about the French elections, and am just floored about their voter turnout. I can’t get past it to read the rest of the article!!!

They had EIGHTY FOUR PERCENT VOTER TURNOUT. Yes, that would be 84%, an eight in the tens place and a 4 in the ones place. Out of every 10 people, 8.4 voted.

Do you realize how pathetic the voter turnout is in “the land of the free”, aka “The Greatest Democracy in the World”?! Back in 1960 we had 63% (63.1% here, and 62.8% here) – and that was the highest since 1930. Can you believe that?? The best we have done in the past 77 years is 63%.

Pardon me while I play with the numbers for a sec – I’m not done with the soap box yet.

Take a look at the US voter turnout results (presidential elections 1932-2004 only sorted by percentage):

1960 – 62.8%
1964 – 61.9%
1952 – 61.6%
1968 – 60.9%
1956 – 59.3%
1940 – 58.9%
1936 – 56.9%
1944 – 56%
2004 – 55.5%
1972 – 55.2%
1992 – 55.1%
1976 – 53.5%
1984 – 53.3%
1980 – 52.8%
1932 – 52.5%
1948 – 51.1%
1988 – 50.3%
2000 – 50.2%
1996 – 49%

I think the numbers speak for themselves there. Can you tell I’m pissed?

I sincerely hope the next election will SURPASS the 1960 level. Come on folks – are we gonna let the French beat us at our own game?!
