Technology Sucks

I’ve been in one of those funks for a few days now, and what really hasn’t helped matters is that it seems like everything is breaking around me… My cell phone display broke Saturday night, and I “only” had to pay $50 to get a refurbished one sent to me – which should be here today.

The big thing, however, is that Keith’s computer has crashed. AGAIN. Yes, this just happened a few months ago and prompted him to buy a new HP, but here we are again trying to salvage files off a crashed hard drive.

DEJA VU.

We’ve made progress using Knoppix (a version of Linux that runs off a CD-ROM), but it keeps freezing and locking up whenever we try to move large files off the drive. In the meantime I was able to use HP’s tech support chat yesterday and got a replacement drive ordered for Keith without all the stress previous calls to “tech support” have caused. The replacement drive should be here by tomorrow, so hopefully by then we’ll have salvaged all the data we possibly can.

Keith’s bottom line: don’t buy HP.

Try using HELIX - much better live CD for getting data off hard drives.
