Sheaves, Wheat, blah blah blah

I felt like doing something different tonight, and have been wanting to get back to the Dallas Museum of Art, so just before leaving work I checked out their website to see what was going on.

Starry Nights in the Courtyard

Thursdays, October 26, November 2, 9, and 16
6:00–9:00 p.m.

Join us during Thursday Night Live Presented by AT&T for a special experience under the stars. Tour the Van Gogh exhibition and enjoy performances and cocktails in the Fleischner Courtyard.

Sweet! Before Nanette took over my phone I had Van Gogh’s Starry Night as my wallpaper. I would have sworn I read somewhere that students get in free – so I figured it would be a fun free night out.

We grabbed dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant first (Thai Orchid), and with a couple beers, appetizers, and two entrees, plus tip I ended up paying about $50. Not a good start….

Then we get downtown… We end up in an underground parking garage–for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra… LOL I’m really happy by this point. Finally we find the museum (like it’s hard to find or something), and discover that it’s $12 for students to see the Van Gogh exhibit ($15 regular price, I think). So there’s another $24.

The exhibit is called Sheaves of Wheat. The whole theme is wheat. Sheaves of it. I just was not feeling inspired… I guess the wheat was supposed to symbolize the cycle of life and yada yada yada. For our $24 we each got a little guided audio tour thingy, and the woman on that just annoyed the heck out of me, talking all artsy fartsy and mispronouncing “Van Gogh” (she actually pronounced the second “g”). (ok maybe I’m ignorant for pronouncing it like “go”)

To say I was disappointed is putting it mildy…. Don’t get me wrong, there was some cool stuff – just not what I’d hoped for. I mean come on – wheat….?! (no, I didn’t read about the exhibit before we went – just saw “Van Gogh” and though “cool!”)

Grey’s Anatomy was a rerun tonight anyway. We did catch Smallville, so I feel better. ;-) But my “fun free night” cost me about $75. :-(
