Out of the Mouths of Babes and Marriage
This is from an Equality Texas newsletter I received today:
This past week, my partner Scott and I had a reunion with my best friend from law school – Stephanie. We were treated to a cello concert by her 7 year old son, Noah, after we talked about the good old days of studying and stress. A few nights later, Stephanie invited me over for dinner as both our spouses were out of town. Noah was eating his dinner when I walked in, and after a few minutes he blurted out, “I didn’t know you were married!” I looked down at my ring and then looked at his mom, who nodded her head.
“Yes, I am married.” I said, and he asked, “Who are you married to?” His mom told him Scott was my partner. I said that we were not actually married because it was not legal. Stephanie chimed in that it was legal in Massachusetts.
Immediately, Noah asks, “Why don’t ya’ll move to Massachusetts?” I told him that we both worked in Texas and liked living here and that it was too cold there anyway. He had a pensive look on his face and said, “If you were married in Massachusetts, I guess you wouldn’t be married in Texas.” (Wow, this kid is precocious, I thought.) I said yes that was true. Then he looked at me and said, “That isn’t fair.”
Well, no, it is not fair. Sometimes we say that our elected officials act like seven year olds. I think we give them way too much credit.
In a few weeks, the United States Senate will once again consider the Federal Marriage Amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. In a time where we face crushing debt, war in Iraq, millions of uninsured children, and other critical issues, the Senate will try to write discrimination into the Constitution and try their best to drive extremists to the polls in November.
Let’s be frank. We know that Senators Hutchison and Cornyn will support the amendment. But, they need to know that they have constituents who do NOT support writing discrimination into the U.S. Constitution. Join us today and tell your Texas Senators you oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment. We cannot afford to give up the successes we have had in Massachusetts, Vermont, and now, possibly, California. Yes, as Noah said, it isn’t fair. Let’s have the courage of that 7 year old and say it to our representatives.
